Why winter is one of the best times for outdoor family photos | Sydney Family Photographer
When most people think of family photos, they picture golden summer sunsets and kids splashing at the beach. But let me let you in on a little secret—as a Sydney-based family photographer, winter is actually one of my favourite seasons to shoot in.
Controversial, I know! But hear me out. Between the dreamy light, the cozy outfits and the earlier sunsets (hello, kids still going to bed on time!), there’s a lot to love about a winter family session.
So if you’ve been putting off booking your photos because it’s “not the right season,” this post is for you.
Earlier Sunset = No Bedtime Battles
Let’s start with the big one—timing. In summer, golden hour can be as late as 8pm, which is beautiful but a little tricky with toddlers.
In winter, the sun sets much earlier—around 4:45 to 5:30pm—which means we get that same soft, golden light without the headache of trying to work out nap and meal schedules, and without pushing into bedtime routines.
Winter Clothes Look Amazing on Camera
Knits, layers, textures—this is where winter really shines. Think soft jumpers, chunky cardigans, boots, scarves and earthy tones. These kinds of outfits not only look beautiful, but they add depth and texture to your photos.
Layering also gives you a bit more freedom to play with colour and styling, and if you’re someone who doesn’t love having arms or legs out in photos—winter’s your season!
No Sweaty Faces or Sticky Clothes
Let’s be real. Summer can be hot. Especially if you’re wrangling small children, walking to a location, or just holding someone on your hip.
With my sessions, we move a lot—walking, playing, exploring, piggybacks. That kind of activity in summer can leave everyone feeling sticky and flustered, but in Sydney’s mild winter, it’s just enough to keep warm and comfortable. Win-win.
It’s Not Even That Cold in Sydney
Winter here is nothing like the winters you see in movies. Most days sit around 15–20°C, and as long as you’ve got layers and a warm jacket, it’s actually super pleasant to be outside.
The park is always a bit warmer than the beach, so if you’re worried about your kids and then cold, definitely choose a park location.
It Rains Less in Winter (Yes, Really!)
You heard me, winter in Sydney is drier. There are less afternoon thunderstorms and the weather is much more predictable. It might surprise you, but Sydney actually gets less rain in winter than in summer. While summer storms can be unpredictable and wash out an evening session, winter tends to bring clear, crisp days that are perfect for photos.
Less chance of rain = fewer reschedules, more flexibility, and a better chance of locking in your preferred date without worrying about the weather.
It’s the Perfect Excuse to Cuddle Up
Winter naturally encourages closeness—snuggles, hand-holding, huddling up in jumpers. And that connection? That’s exactly what makes your photos so special.
So if you’re feeling unsure about a winter session, just imagine this: cuddling your kids in a chunky knit, golden light behind you, the sound of the ocean or rustling trees, and the calm of a cool winter evening. Sounds like magic, right?
Are you ready to book?
So there you have it—winter isn’t just a “good enough” season for family photos, it’s actually one of the best. It’s cozy, calm, golden, and wonderfully real.
